So these bottle openers are made from the used staves, the staves are awesome, they are flawed, charred, scored, just awesome.

As such I adopted the mess with them as little as possible approach. So the charred portion is sealed with shellac to keep the feel, but prevent your hands from looking like you were playing in a campfire.

Finally all of the wood is sealed with Odies Oil, an incredible wood finish, don't believe me, do a search for Odie's Oil and you will see. All of this finishing allows the wood to be protected, but still feel like wood. If you want some history on these staves, read below.

Final thought, since these are used staves, they are all unique, they have different stains on the boards, some with markings, some without, so what you receive will look awesome, but will not be exactly what is in the pictures.
History of these Staves

Hold Maryland History in your hand. These handheld bottle openers are made from the staves of used rye whiskey barrels from the Sagamore Distillery in Baltimore, MD.

Rye was and is a wonderful cover crop, but who knew such a delicious and spicy beverage could be made from it. Well our ancestors did.

The Maryland area was ideal for growing rye, which was used for many things including improving the soil. Other grains such as corn were more difficult to grow so rye it was.

Rye Whiskies really fell out for a long time, but they are back and it is wonderful to have a Rye distilled back in Maryland where so many were made before.
